Treatments

Examinations
At Apple Dental Practice we recommend regular examinations to help maintain your oral health, which would include a soft tissue check to check for any abnormal changes in the mouth. We also perform the appropriate radiographic investigations to check for early signs of dental decay that can then be treated before it becomes a problem, and diet and oral hygiene advice.

Fillings
We offer a full range of fillings to restore your teeth. These can be amalgam fillings (silver fillings) or white fillings. In most cases we can place tooth coloured fillings in the back teeth, so if you are interested in more aesthetic restorations then please ask your dentist.

Root fillings
When a nerve has died in a tooth, through injury or infection, then in order to save the tooth it is necessary to do a root canal filling. This involves removing the infected portion of the tooth and filling in this area with root canal filling material. This then enables the infected area to heal.

Bleaching
If you are interested in tooth whitening then at Apple Dental Practice we have many options available to you. Zoom whitening is when bleaching gel is applied to your teeth and activated by a light. This takes just over an hour and is the quickest way to whiten your teeth. Zoom bleaching is usually done in conjunction with a home bleaching system which is when special bleaching trays are made and the bleaching agent applied for about an hour at home. Please feel free to discuss the options available to you at your next appointment.

Crowns
When a tooth is heavily filled then sometimes it is best to restore it with a crown. This will help support the remaining tooth tissue and improve the appearance and function. There are many different types of crowns available, from simple metal crowns to more aesthetic tooth coloured crowns.

Bridges
When you have lost a tooth then it can often be replaced by a bridge. This is a permanent replacement that is cemented into place. This can be an adhesive bridge that requires little or no drilling and is simply bonded to an adjacent tooth. It may also be a conventional bridge which is similar to a series of crowns fused together, replacing the lost tooth. Bridges offer an excellent and quick way of replacing a missing tooth.

Veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is bonded onto the front surface of a tooth. This can dramatically improve the appearance, masking irregularities in size, shape and colour.

Hygienists
At Apple Dental Practice we feel that prevention is better than cure. The major cause of tooth loss today is through gum disease, which is when the bone support for the teeth is lost due to the body’s response to plaque and calculus build up. Our hygienists are trained to remove this plaque and calculus on the teeth but will also show you the most effective ways that you can maintain your oral hygiene yourself.

Dentures
Dentures are false teeth that can be removed from the mouth for cleaning. They can be made out of plastic or they sometimes have a metal framework. Dentures may be used to restore your dentition when all the teeth have been lost or for when you still have some remaining teeth.

Sports Mouthguards
If you or your children play contact sports, then having a well fitting sports mouthguard is essential. We will make you a custom made mouthguard , in your choice of colour or pattern, that will help protect your teeth against trauma.

Sedation
Patients who are anxious about receiving treatment have the option of intravenous sedation, which is carried out at the practice by Mr Greig, who holds the highest qualification in dental sedation currently attainable in the UK.

Historically many patients chose to have a general anaesthetic (put to sleep), however there are inherent risks associated with this and it is much safer to have sedation for dental procedures.

The feeling of sedation is akin to being very relaxed and somewhat drowsy. Although you may feel like going to sleep you will not actually sleep; in contrast to general anaesthesia patients can breathe spontaneously and respond to verbal commands. However in the majority of cases most patients cannot remember anything about the procedure. Some patients even enjoy the experience of sedation!

Dental Sedation is extremely safe. All patients are closely monitored by non-invasive methods. Blood pressure is recorded before, during and after the procedure and the oxygen concentration of the blood is monitored throughout.

You must bring an escort with you for treatment under sedation and they must accompany you home and remain with you for 24 hours. You will be sufficiently recovered to be able to walk unaided out of the dental practice but may feel some slight sedation effects within the 24 hours following your appointment.

Wisdom teeth

  • What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the very back molar teeth, which are generally the last teeth to enter the gums, usually during the late teens or twenties. Some people may experience this even later.
  • Why do they cause problems?
Often there is little space for these teeth, and they can become wedged in (known as ‘impacted’). Some remain buried and cause no problem, but others may lead to recurrent infections in the gums, decay, damage to adjacent teeth, or may cause ulcers in the gums or cause cysts to form in the jawbone. Current guidelines suggest that wisdom teeth should be removed in these cases.
  • How long will the procedure take?
The removal of wisdom teeth normally takes 20 minutes but may take up to 45 minutes.
  • What kind of anaesthetic do I have?
The procedure can be done with either local or general anaesthetic. In the Dental Surgery local anaesthetic is normally used, with or without some form of sedation.A local anaesthetic involves an injection to numb part of the jaw and lip. You are awake throughout the procedure but should not feel any pain. The numbing effects will last for about 2-3 hours.Mr Greig has been taking out wisdom teeth for patients in hospital and dental practice for over 10 years. He has extensive experience in this field and is able to offer patients the convenience of treatment in familiar surroundings thus avoiding an unnecessary and daunting visit to hospital. Many patients choose to be unaware of the procedure and with this in mind Mr Greig offers intravenous sedation in the practice.
